Know ThySelf: My Symbols in Art
Hi, Dear Reader,
Understanding the significance of symbols in art is crucial for appreciating the depth and complexity of artistic works. Symbols have been used throughout history to convey profound meanings, emotions, and cultural values.
By delving into the world of symbols in art, we embark on a journey of discovery that reveals the interconnectedness of different cultures, beliefs, and artistic expressions.
Artists often incorporate symbols into their work to communicate ideas that transcend language and time. These symbols can represent universal concepts such as love, death, rebirth, or power, allowing viewers to connect with the artwork on a deeper level. Whether it's the use of religious symbols, mythological motifs, or personal emblems, each symbol adds layers of interpretation and invites contemplation. Furthermore, the interpretation of symbols in art is not limited to the artist's intention but also depends on the viewer's perception and cultural background.
What may hold a specific meaning in one culture could evoke entirely different associations in another. This dynamic interplay between the artist, the artwork, and the audience enriches the artistic experience and fosters a dialogue that transcends boundaries. In essence, exploring symbols in art is a profound exercise in self-discovery.
By reflecting on the meanings and implications of various symbols, we gain insights into our own beliefs, values, and emotions. Through this process, we come to know ourselves better and develop a deeper appreciation for the intricate tapestry of human expression that is art.
When I started my work as a painter, again after over forty decades ago, in 2020, I did not know MySelf yet, as I do now.
Only after having finalised some pieces did I start to understand, that I HAVE some symbols, or subject matters, that I paint repeatedly. Those were: HEART, STARS, THE MOON, THE SUN, A HUMAN FACE, A HUMAN HAND and A HORSE.
"Haqqi" was the very first piece I made. Right from the start I had painted the moon, a horse, and a human face.
This painting was inspired by a person very dear to me. His name means "thruth", and he is worthy of his name. I wanted to catch him on canvas, in an environment that reminds me of something ancient.
And yes, I painted a red heart, too.
The second painting I made was "Enheduanna". She was a Lady living in the ancient Mesopotamia, in my languge "the land of two streams". "Meso" means "between" and "Potamoi" means "rivers" in Greek. It is the land from where "Haqqi´s" history orientates from.
Enheduanna was a daughter of a king, and the first female poet documented. She was very respected, that is why she was given the prefix "En" before her name. It could be given for a female or male, based on a high respect on the person.
Enheduanna was also called the "Lady of the Largest Heart" and "Queen of the Moon". She was als known as Inanna.
She drove a pari of horses, that is why I painted a horse, too.
The horse has lost one eye, by which I wanted to remind, that Life often times includes pain and sorrow. But he carries himself so straight and strong: pain and suffering can be beaten, and Life is always valuable. One can also think, that he has only closed his eye, and sleeps.
I noticed only after wards, that Enheduanna´s face looks exactly as my Sister´s!
And then, finally the third of the paintings in the beginning of my Journey was "Stigmata Ad Astra". I painted a lady´s face on black backround with red clouds, and included a skull, too. And, yes of course, there are stars and The Moon, too.
The hand with a wound is very important to me: it discribes, again, the suffering and pain, that belong to Life. But the strong skull symbolizes the power of human ability to choose better, to change things.
And the black sky means the Universe, or Multiverse, where all us souls belong together.
Now that I look back on these pieces, I fully understand, why I painted what I painted.
And today, I could not agree more on their meaning to me, and hopefully you, too. From those days, I have grown a lot to Know My Self, that I am today.
I wish I have been able to give you an insght on my thoughts, and a piece of Beauty of Life, that I see every where.
I will open this idea a bit more in the next Blog.
See you there, Dear!
Yours in Art,
Liisa
